Wild Blue Beer Review

Wild Blue Beer ReviewCopyright 2008 TheBrewClub.com

This Wild Blue beer review is the first review I am doing using the new and improved “Proper Beer Pouring” technique discussed earlier. I’m also letting this Wild Blue Beer sit in the glass for a little bit before I chug it all down. Let’s see if it makes a difference or not, shall we?  Wild Blue is also the first Blueberry Beer that I’m reviewing for The Brew Club.

Anyway, back to the Wild Blue Beer! Interesting thing this beer. It says on the label “Blueberry Lager”, and then on the side label where one would find the UPC code, it reads “Flavored Ale”. Now, I was under the impression that an Ale was an Ale, and a Lager was a Lager. Kind of like two separate families, and it has to do with how the beer ferments - Lagers ferment on top, Ales on bottom. I’m not a beerologist, so maybe I’m just missing something, but I didn’t know that an Ale could also be a Lager. Anyone know?

So, after about 10 minutes out of the fridge, I opened the Wild Blue Beer and poured it (properly) into my official testing-glass. I really let it glug into the glass, and it created the weirdest, pinkish-purple foam head you could imagine! It was bizarre to me how much this beer did not look like beer at all! I waited for the foam to subside, and then I poured the rest of the blueberry beer into the glass. Wild Blue Beer Review

The Wild Blue Beer supposedly has all-natural ingredients, and the label warns there may be some blueberry sediment in the bottle. Well, I didn’t see any blueberry sediment, but the reddish-purple beer was in fact a little cloudy. It looked to me, like some kind of grape juice, maybe a cran-grape color if you can imagine that. The smell was nothing like a beer, but rather it was much more like a wine smell. A little blueberry scent, but to me, it smelled like a homemade wine.

When I tasted this blueberry beer for the first time, I was also reminded of a homemade wine. Maybe I’m nuts, but it just didn’t taste like blueberry to me. It tasted like Vincenzo’s wine from the cellar. Speaking of Vincenzo’s wine from the cellar, this brew has an 8% Alcohol content, which is somewhat higher than your typical beer, so watch out if you have a few of these!

Well, as I always do, I finished the entire beer so I could give the best review possible. My verdict is that while a Blueberry flavored beer is cool and different, and Wild Blue certainly looks, tastes, and smells different than any other beer I’ve tried, I just couldn’t get into it. It seemed a little over-the-top, and came too close to a kind of weird beer-wine hybrid that I just couldn’t appreciate.  Personally, I think the Blueberry Beer from Blue Point does a better job.

I’m glad I tried it, but I think I’ll pass in the future. Anyone else have a different experience with this?

OMG wild blue is my new favorite beer… i love hornsby’s so i love the sweet stuff. I’ve got this obsession with blueberry iced coffee so mixing blueberry with beer is the best i’ve ever had. A friend brought it to my party… its amazing.

I liked it, but I also found it to be a bit much, too much blueberry, too much alcohol (I mean, you can taste it, like medicine.) and too tart. I did get a second six after the first ’cause I like to sample around and for a strong fruit beer, it’s cheap.

Wild Blue is da bomb tried it in Ft. Collins CO. 4 the 1st. time and was hooked. Was down in San Antonio Tx. had it again so on my way back to Dallas my girl and I stopped in Waco and bought the whole store. Pour it in a frosted mug and catch the Wild Blue Bug….

I definitely agree with the post… The taste of the blueberry was a bit overwhelming… It really didn’t have the taste of beer at all but rather a wine type of taste.

Tried it in wonderful Lock Haven PA. Love this Beer!! I wish I could find it in Baltimore. Deliciously sweet and tangy. Plus, this beer tastes much better than other beers with similar alcohol content.

You got it backwards. Lager yeast ferments at colder temperatures and settles at the bottom, while ale does so at warmer temperatures and settles at the top. Can’t say which Wild Blue is though. While it wasn’t the greatest fruit beer I’ve had, at least it was 8% abv.. I figured when I saw it at the store that it was brewed by a big plant, i.e. Anheiser-Busch, so I wasn’t going to get it until I saw the alcohol content. Turns out it is brewed by Anheiser-Busch, yet I was surprised by Wild Blue as it is easy to drink and is definitely strong. It is like drinking wine more than beer and reminds me of Leinenkugel’s Berry Weiss more than Sea Dog’s Wild Blueberry Wheat Ale. Berry Weiss is a much better balanced beer than Wild Blue, and the Sea Dog Bluebeery Ale tastes much more like blueberries. Overall it is a surprise, especially coming from a large American brewery, and I would buy it again. It’s cheap, tastes pretty decent (think grape-blueberry juice/soda), and gets you drunk rather quickly.

I am trying it right now for the first time. It’s not horrible, but it’s TOO SWEET for me. It really is like grape soda with a (big) kick. I am not really getting the blueberry, but it kind of reminds me of Peels. I don’t like Peels, and I don’t like soda, and I was really hoping that this was actually a BEER, so I must admit I am disappointed. Also, the aftertaste makes me feel like I gargled with hard liquor and my mouth and tongue feel like I drank a bunch of cheap margaritas…if that makes any sense.

I am not a big fan of beers–but this is a GREAT product, I guess I really like the sweet factor-I even love blueberry coffee from GEVALIA. I am a new fan of this, but it is getting very hard to find I’m afraid it was a one time or once per season item..I hope not!! I really like this and normally do not drink more than one or two beers per MONTH!!!

I bought two sixpaks once. One tasted really wierd, like too suragy or something. I almost took the other back, but was thirsty and it was fantastic! Just like I remembered from the brewmaster’s club at busch gardens. I think Maybe I got an older one…

I am a huge fan of fruit in beers, however, I found this beer to be undrinkable. The usual refreshing taste I get from beers such as purple haze, and #9 was completely masked by the sweet/bad wine taste. Only the truly daring should try this beer.

I tried this beer last weekend and OMIGOD does it have a kick!! After only half a beer, I had a buzz. I liked the flavor and the color tickled me pink. I give it 5 stars.

I tried this beer for the first time a few weeks ago. Now mind you I haven’t had beer in nearly 20 yrs (since highschool) because I don’t really like the after taste it left. But I really liked Wild Blue because of the taste. I was able to get 1 unopened bottle to take home, but shared with Hubby & now I can’t find it anywhere in my area, New Jersey. If Reece can recommend any other fruity beer he’s had besides this one, maybe we would have something to compare it to…. I’d give it 4 stars, since its the only fruity beer I’ve ever tasted!

I loved it and will continue to drink it. I think it may now be my favorite beer. Plus it only takes a couple beers and WOW i’m feeling it. Great Beer!!!

man, i’m drinking this beer right now. It really tastes kind of like a wine. it doesn’t taste bad at all. the main reason I buy this, over something like budlight or something is because it has more alcohol (8%), AND it tastes pretty good.

I’m having my second as I type this (and wait for the charcoal), and I have to say that I was expecting worse based on the online reviews. The comments made on the online reviews I felt were more fair.

Me: Hate wine no matter how much I try to enjoy it, hate more than a couple of swigs of sugar soft drinks

I expected to hate this beer, but I don’t. I see why people compare it to wine, but it is much closer to watered doen grape juice. A 2-to-1 mix of beer and grape juice is about how this beer felt to me. Not as sugary as actual fruit juice or soda, but very sweet by beer standards. The taste wasn’t wine-y enough to offend me, and I gag on real wine.

It has about half as much sugar by volume a coke (which is still less than real grape juice, fyi), so it was borderline for me on sweetness. but I am drinking a second one now, and it isn’t grossing me out like a 2nd soda would.

The 8% abv for domestic beer price seals it though. This stuff is as cheap as PBR if you just want to get a buzz, and with this you can do so with a decent fruity flavor. I don’t think this is a *great* beer, but it definitely is worth a look and isn’t just yet-another-lager-with-a-funky-name-and-label.

I’m new to the beer world and educating myself as I go along since I prefer wine. I happened on a 6 pack of Sea Dog Bluepaw wild blueberry wheat ale at my local supermarket. I found it to be quite refreshing and the most drinkable of all the beer I’m trying. Now, I am not sure where I can get other brands of blueberry beer as I’m researching on the ‘Net. Since I live next to Maine, I should be able to find other breweries offering blueberry beer since blueberries are a major crop in Maine. Sea Dog Bluepaw blueberry wheat ale has a light taste, amber in color, with a great wheat flavor with a delicate blueberry aroma and taste. Reading the comments about the Michigan blueberry beer has me wondering if it’s even worth trying Wild Blue beer.
