This beer review of Wild Blue Blueberry Beer is the first review I am doing using the new and improved “Proper Beer Pouring” technique discussed earlier. I’m also letting this Wild Blue Beer sit in the glass for a little bit before I chug it all down. Let’s see if it makes a difference or not, shall we? Wild Blue is also the first Blueberry Beer that I’m reviewing for The Brew Club.
Anyway, back to the Wild Blue Beer! Interesting thing this beer. It says on the label “Blueberry Lager”, and then on the side label where one would find the UPC code, it reads “Flavored Ale”. Now, I was under the impression that an Ale was an Ale, and a Lager was a Lager. Kind of like two separate families, and it has to do with how the beer ferments – Lagers ferment on top, Ales on bottom. I’m not a beerologist, so maybe I’m just missing something, but I didn’t know that an Ale could also be a Lager. Anyone know?
So, after about 10 minutes out of the fridge, I opened the Wild Blue Beer and poured it (properly) into my official testing-glass. I really let it glug into the glass, and it created the weirdest, pinkish-purple foam head you could imagine! It was bizarre to me how much this beer did not look like beer at all! I waited for the foam to subside, and then I poured the rest of the blueberry beer into the glass.
The Wild Blue Beer supposedly has all-natural ingredients, and the label warns there may be some blueberry sediment in the bottle. Well, I didn’t see any blueberry sediment, but the reddish-purple beer was in fact a little cloudy. It looked to me, like some kind of grape juice, maybe a cran-grape color if you can imagine that. The smell was nothing like a beer, but rather it was much more like a wine smell. A little blueberry scent, but to me, it smelled like a homemade wine.
When I tasted this blueberry beer for the first time, I was also reminded of a homemade wine. Maybe I’m nuts, but it just didn’t taste like blueberry to me. It tasted like Vincenzo’s wine from the cellar. Speaking of Vincenzo’s wine from the cellar, this brew has an 8% Alcohol content, which is somewhat higher than your typical beer, so watch out if you have a few of these!
Well, as I always do, I finished the entire beer so I could give the best review possible. My verdict is that while a Blueberry flavored beer is cool and different, and Wild Blue certainly looks, tastes, and smells different than any other beer I’ve tried, I just couldn’t get into it. It seemed a little over-the-top, and came too close to a kind of weird beer-wine hybrid that I just couldn’t appreciate. Personally, I think the Blueberry Beer from Blue Point does a better job.
I’m glad I tried it, but I think I’ll pass in the future. Anyone else have a different experience with this?

I Tried this on a whim, because
I love leinenkugel’s Summer Shandy so much, which also is a fruit type beer. It’s my go to beer besides Leines Sunset Wheat.
It’s nice and strong-almost reminds me of those st. Ides fruit malt beverages, but considerably more drinkable. even more than leinies berry wiess IMHO …
Thanks for the comments guys!
This is a lager…”Flavored Ale” is a legal reference to high alcohol content and the fact that it contains non-standard ingredients.
The legal label has little to do with beer style.
@brewintern – THANKS for clearing that up for us! You’re the first person to come along and explain it, and so I am much appreciative! I would think that labeling guidelines are rather strict – but it seems that there are some loopholes. Thanks again.
.-= Scott-TheBrewClub´s last blog ..Left Hand Milk Stout =-.
This is not beer. I tried it, unfortunately. It is not a lager, nor is it an ale. Why would the label contradict itself? It’s a pretender. It’s a sugary syrupy fruit drink mixed with malt liquor. Think Juicy Juice + King Cobra. You taste absolutely no beer in this. It doesn’t even foam up like a beer. Yeah, it’s carbonated and does foam a little…. but malt liquor style. All you taste is the too sweet blueberry fruity flavoring. The only plus to this false brew is that it boasts an 8% alchohol content, but still doesn’t make up for this liquored up juice drink in a bottle. It’s a high school kid’s/fraternity girl’s version of a beer. So for those of you saying you don’t like beer, but you do like this. Sorry, you still don’t like beer because this is not beer. Not trying to be negative here, but I was misled and sadly mistaken. I wish I could get my money back. You want a real fruit flavored beer? Try getting your hands on some Abita Strawberry Harvest Lager from Abita Springs, Louisiana. They brew an actual lager that is infuised with actual strawberries and strawberry juice. You taste beer with a nice natural hint of real strawberries. Not sugary sweet syrup. It’s perfect for crawfish season.
Might as well grab a Four Loko and drink that. It’s cheaper and you get more of that malt liquor buzz, yall are talking about.
@BeerDrinker – Thanks for sharing! I’ve had a couple of Abita beers (Purple Haze and Satsuma Wheat) and while neither were personal favorites, they were both at least balanced.
BTW, 4 Loko is illegal in NJ now!
Terrible miscalculation. Who is this marketed to? I’m on beer 5 because I have nothing else to drink. Certainly doesn’t even remotely hold a candle to craft beers of the same ilk. Even sucks worse than Leinenkugel, if that is possible. Like blueberry pancake syrup. Wish I’d done some research; if I had any idea this label was on the A-B roster, I wouldn’t have given it the time of day. Only bought it because the rednecks who stock the local liquor store stopped ordering Allagash, the only other high ABV I can find around here. There’s a local brewer in nearby Atlanta called Sweetwater, actually makes the best blueberry whit-beer I’ve ever had. EVER. And I’ve had a lot of beer. If only they’d make an 8% ABV version. Best of both worlds. Gotta admit, the alcohol content is the only thing that keeps me plowing through this six pack. Maybe some potato chips are in order to counter all the sweetener…
@Beer Is Great – That you will consume a six-pack of Wild Blue in one sitting is amazing to me. Hats off to you!
I’ve heard that the Sweetwater blueberry is a great beer, but unfortunately I don’t think it makes it up to Jersey, otherwise I’d try it.
Thanks for stopping by!
I live right outside of philly and i’m about a 15min drive to trenton nj and or other parts of south jersey. Can anybody tell me where i can buy any brand of raspberry beer and or blueberry beer… where and what are the names of the beers?
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!
@lennon love – I live in NNJ (sorry) but I think that Wild Blue, along with Sea Dog are the two blueberry beers I see most often.
Here’s a link to what I’ve tried so far. Good luck!

Im in southport, NC and i tried a sea dog blueberry beer in a pub in wilmington on april 9th and fell in love with it now im goin crazy tryin to find it, can anyone help with where this could atleast possibly be?
@Calico – It must be available locally if you got it in the pub. I’d call some places in that area, maybe even the pub to see if they can point you in the right direction.
Just popped open my first Wild Blue and could not be more dissppointed. Your review nailed it. Doesn’t taste like a beer at all. Way too sweet and carbonated(?). Just not good. Won’t be purchasing again.
@brewdog thanks! sometimes, people agree with my opinions! sorry bout the beer though…
What did i do! ..i tried to get Sea Dog Blueberry at the local liquor store and it was closed..so i go to the supermarket and see WILD BLUE i ask the manager if it was the same as sea dog and he said not really..What an understatement he made! it is by far the worst beer i ever tasted..for those of you who wanted a bit of blueberry taste without compromising the taste of a real beer get Sea Dog.I gotta return this thing tommorow ,never thought id ever return beer in my life.
@jaimie – Sorry to hear that! Sea Dog was pretty good in comparison. Thanks for sharing and good luck!
Blech….yuck. This has a nerve calling itself a beer, tastes like wine mixed with blueberry kool aid or grape soda. I had to get the taste out of my mouth as quickly as possible…actually drove 15 mins to my local pub that has its own fantastic Blueberry ale. I guess for maybe those who don’t like real beer “Wild Blue” is a decent alternative. But, I would rather a Wachusett or Opa-Opa Blueberry or DFH Black and Blue instead, something that actually tastes like a good beer first and blueberry second. The only way I will be able to drink what is left of this 6 pack is to mix it with a decent IPA or something and hope for the best. Lesson learned…
Thanks Amy. I feel for you! Your comment reminded me I need to try the DFH Black & Blue sometime.
Interesting to hear all the different opinions of this beer. Here’s a review of a fruit beer I did for a craft beer group I organized called Tristate Beer LOvers. It’s called Sam Smith’s Organic Raspberry Beer. Enjoy: http://www.meetup.com/Tristatebeerlovers/messages/boards/thread/14223761
Mike – Thanks for stopping in. Being in NJ myself, I think I’ll check out your group!
Hi Scott, et al. I absolutely love Wild Blue Beer. I don’t care if they call it X or Y or whatever, It is good stuff. I used to spend $$$ per month on my favorite Zinfandel. Now I can have 2 or 3 Wild Blu’s and I am happy…in many ways…taste buds and head relief, and dollars spent. This Wild Blue by Anheiser-Busch is more similar to a Lambic (beer) than anything else. The flavor is not too sweet, but has a fruit flavor for adult taste buds. If your looking for a malty, hoppy…I don’t think so. Your taste buds will be put on a Wild roller coaster. Yea Ha for Wild Blue. Keep it coming.
I hope they keep making it and selling it at my local shop.
I like the fact that with one beer I don’t consume too many calories, but enjoy the effect.
Tracy, thanks for the comment. I’m not sure if I agree with the Lambic comparison, but I do get what you’re saying about it. I just thought it tasted like wine. I suppose I should pick up another bottle at some point to re-evaluate this brew. It remains very popular!
This is really a great tasting beer and it has one hell of a kick. It is a little pricey and hard to find but other than that, I really enjoy its full-bodied sweet refreshing taste.
@Ken, good to hear! Thanks for the comment on Wild Blue!
Where can you find this beer in california?
Mmmmm so good! Taste it, Feel it, Love it!!!
I liked the first sip, and the next couple sips while it was ice cold. But for a BEER, it was too sweet for me. I liked flavored beers, but this is much more of a wine cooler. Their really isn’t a good beer taste in this stuff. I have a feeling I will wake up tomorrow slightly sick from all the sugar. I’m glad I tried it though, been wanting to for a while. If you liked sweet drinks, this is for you. This should be for all females who don’t like beer. Try this and you will like it! I promise.
For a brief second you can almost taste the beer…then the blueberry juice gets in the way. The only good thing abot this beer is that it is strong. I have never been a fan of the blueberry beers but thought I would give this a try. The color throws you off at first. The color of the head will be purple. Almost like they made a beer and added blueberry juice to it. YUCK
@Haley – Yeah, its definitely not a ‘normal’ beer. To me, it tasted like bad home-made wine!
@Eamon – HA, the purple head was different, that’s for sure! The picture up there isn’t so good, but you can make out the oddness of it!
Thanks for the comments!
To Hornytoad: Von’s Grocery carries Wild Blue.
) But it sells out FAST!
It may be sweet upon the first dozen or so you experience, but you need to give a new beer a chance & pouring one isn’t even close to getting to know a beer.
If you like sweet brews, this is Da bomb! Great buzz, no hard feelings the next day after an eventful night of blueberry kickin! You want a happy night chillin with friends……drink this beer!
A+ in my book! I want a t-shirt! I think I’ll even get a blueberry tattooed on my ass! Ha ha……peace.
I love it! I have tried many different kinds and always come back to wild blue.
Nenia. People love this stuff. If you’e interested, I saw versions of this in blackberry called Wild Black and another version called Wild Red which I assume has some other kind of berry in it. Might be worth a try if you enjoyed the Wild Blue.
