Wild Blue Beer Review

This beer review of Wild Blue Blueberry Beer is the first review I am doing using the new and improved “Proper Beer Pouring” technique discussed earlier.  I’m also letting this Wild Blue Beer sit in the glass for a little bit before I chug it all down. Let’s see if it makes a difference or not, shall we?  Wild Blue is also the first Blueberry Beer that I’m reviewing for The Brew Club.

Anyway, back to the Wild Blue Beer! Interesting thing this beer. It says on the label “Blueberry Lager”, and then on the side label where one would find the UPC code, it reads “Flavored Ale”. Now, I was under the impression that an Ale was an Ale, and a Lager was a Lager. Kind of like two separate families, and it has to do with how the beer ferments – Lagers ferment on top, Ales on bottom.  I’m not a beerologist, so maybe I’m just missing something, but I didn’t know that an Ale could also be a Lager.  Anyone know?

So, after about 10 minutes out of the fridge, I opened the Wild Blue Beer and poured it (properly) into my official testing-glass.  I really let it glug into the glass, and it created the weirdest, pinkish-purple foam head you could imagine!  It was bizarre to me how much this beer did not look like beer at all! I waited for the foam to subside, and then I poured the rest of the blueberry beer into the glass. Wild Blue Beer Review

The Wild Blue Beer supposedly has all-natural ingredients, and the label warns there may be some blueberry sediment in the bottle.  Well, I didn’t see any blueberry sediment, but the reddish-purple beer was in fact a little cloudy.  It looked to me, like some kind of grape juice, maybe a cran-grape color if you can imagine that. The smell was nothing like a beer, but rather it was much more like a wine smell. A little blueberry scent, but to me, it smelled like a homemade wine.

When I tasted this blueberry beer for the first time, I was also reminded of a homemade wine.  Maybe I’m nuts, but it just didn’t taste like blueberry to me. It tasted like Vincenzo’s wine from the cellar.   Speaking of Vincenzo’s wine from the cellar, this brew has an 8% Alcohol content, which is somewhat higher than your typical beer, so watch out if you have a few of these!

Brew your own Beer at home! Coopers Home Brewing kits make great gifts!

Well, as I always do, I finished the entire beer so I could give the best review possible.  My verdict is that while a Blueberry flavored beer is cool and different, and Wild Blue certainly looks, tastes, and smells different than any other beer I’ve tried, I just couldn’t get into it. It seemed a little over-the-top, and came too close to a kind of weird beer-wine hybrid that I just couldn’t appreciate.  Personally, I think the Blueberry Beer from Blue Point does a better job.

I’m glad I tried it, but I think I’ll pass in the future. Anyone else have a different experience with this?

Rating: ★½☆☆☆

OMG wild blue is my new favorite beer… i love hornsby’s so i love the sweet stuff. I’ve got this obsession with blueberry iced coffee so mixing blueberry with beer is the best i’ve ever had. A friend brought it to my party… its amazing.

I liked it, but I also found it to be a bit much, too much blueberry, too much alcohol (I mean, you can taste it, like medicine.) and too tart. I did get a second six after the first ’cause I like to sample around and for a strong fruit beer, it’s cheap.

Wild Blue is da bomb tried it in Ft. Collins CO. 4 the 1st. time and was hooked. Was down in San Antonio Tx. had it again so on my way back to Dallas my girl and I stopped in Waco and bought the whole store. Pour it in a frosted mug and catch the Wild Blue Bug….

  4. Liz said:

I definitely agree with the post… The taste of the blueberry was a bit overwhelming… It really didn’t have the taste of beer at all but rather a wine type of taste.

Tried it in wonderful Lock Haven PA. Love this Beer!! I wish I could find it in Baltimore. Deliciously sweet and tangy. Plus, this beer tastes much better than other beers with similar alcohol content.

You got it backwards. Lager yeast ferments at colder temperatures and settles at the bottom, while ale does so at warmer temperatures and settles at the top. Can’t say which Wild Blue is though. While it wasn’t the greatest fruit beer I’ve had, at least it was 8% abv.. I figured when I saw it at the store that it was brewed by a big plant, i.e. Anheiser-Busch, so I wasn’t going to get it until I saw the alcohol content. Turns out it is brewed by Anheiser-Busch, yet I was surprised by Wild Blue as it is easy to drink and is definitely strong. It is like drinking wine more than beer and reminds me of Leinenkugel’s Berry Weiss more than Sea Dog’s Wild Blueberry Wheat Ale. Berry Weiss is a much better balanced beer than Wild Blue, and the Sea Dog Bluebeery Ale tastes much more like blueberries. Overall it is a surprise, especially coming from a large American brewery, and I would buy it again. It’s cheap, tastes pretty decent (think grape-blueberry juice/soda), and gets you drunk rather quickly.

I am trying it right now for the first time. It’s not horrible, but it’s TOO SWEET for me. It really is like grape soda with a (big) kick. I am not really getting the blueberry, but it kind of reminds me of Peels. I don’t like Peels, and I don’t like soda, and I was really hoping that this was actually a BEER, so I must admit I am disappointed. Also, the aftertaste makes me feel like I gargled with hard liquor and my mouth and tongue feel like I drank a bunch of cheap margaritas…if that makes any sense.

Loved it, Not sure why people don’t.

I am not a big fan of beers–but this is a GREAT product, I guess I really like the sweet factor-I even love blueberry coffee from GEVALIA. I am a new fan of this, but it is getting very hard to find I’m afraid it was a one time or once per season item..I hope not!! I really like this and normally do not drink more than one or two beers per MONTH!!!

I just had it last weekend, recommended by my brother-in-law. Steve was right, this beer rocks. I loved it. Problem is, there is only one liquer store in my area that sells it and it’s not exactly around the corner. I can’t find it on line, any help?

I bought two sixpaks once. One tasted really wierd, like too suragy or something. I almost took the other back, but was thirsty and it was fantastic! Just like I remembered from the brewmaster’s club at busch gardens. I think Maybe I got an older one…

I am a huge fan of fruit in beers, however, I found this beer to be undrinkable. The usual refreshing taste I get from beers such as purple haze, and #9 was completely masked by the sweet/bad wine taste. Only the truly daring should try this beer.

I tried this beer last weekend and OMIGOD does it have a kick!! After only half a beer, I had a buzz. I liked the flavor and the color tickled me pink. I give it 5 stars.

I tried this beer for the first time a few weeks ago. Now mind you I haven’t had beer in nearly 20 yrs (since highschool) because I don’t really like the after taste it left. But I really liked Wild Blue because of the taste. I was able to get 1 unopened bottle to take home, but shared with Hubby & now I can’t find it anywhere in my area, New Jersey. If Reece can recommend any other fruity beer he’s had besides this one, maybe we would have something to compare it to…. I’d give it 4 stars, since its the only fruity beer I’ve ever tasted!

I loved it and will continue to drink it. I think it may now be my favorite beer. Plus it only takes a couple beers and WOW i’m feeling it. Great Beer!!!

  20. Zach said:

man, i’m drinking this beer right now. It really tastes kind of like a wine. it doesn’t taste bad at all. the main reason I buy this, over something like budlight or something is because it has more alcohol (8%), AND it tastes pretty good.

  21. Cliff in Tallahassee said:

I’m having my second as I type this (and wait for the charcoal), and I have to say that I was expecting worse based on the online reviews. The comments made on the online reviews I felt were more fair.

Me: Hate wine no matter how much I try to enjoy it, hate more than a couple of swigs of sugar soft drinks

I expected to hate this beer, but I don’t. I see why people compare it to wine, but it is much closer to watered doen grape juice. A 2-to-1 mix of beer and grape juice is about how this beer felt to me. Not as sugary as actual fruit juice or soda, but very sweet by beer standards. The taste wasn’t wine-y enough to offend me, and I gag on real wine.

It has about half as much sugar by volume a coke (which is still less than real grape juice, fyi), so it was borderline for me on sweetness. but I am drinking a second one now, and it isn’t grossing me out like a 2nd soda would.

The 8% abv for domestic beer price seals it though. This stuff is as cheap as PBR if you just want to get a buzz, and with this you can do so with a decent fruity flavor. I don’t think this is a *great* beer, but it definitely is worth a look and isn’t just yet-another-lager-with-a-funky-name-and-label.

  22. Vicky H said:

Where can you buy this in the Dallas area?

  23. Joy said:

I’m new to the beer world and educating myself as I go along since I prefer wine. I happened on a 6 pack of Sea Dog Bluepaw wild blueberry wheat ale at my local supermarket. I found it to be quite refreshing and the most drinkable of all the beer I’m trying. Now, I am not sure where I can get other brands of blueberry beer as I’m researching on the ‘Net. Since I live next to Maine, I should be able to find other breweries offering blueberry beer since blueberries are a major crop in Maine. Sea Dog Bluepaw blueberry wheat ale has a light taste, amber in color, with a great wheat flavor with a delicate blueberry aroma and taste. Reading the comments about the Michigan blueberry beer has me wondering if it’s even worth trying Wild Blue beer.

  24. Jimbo said:

For those wanting to get it… I got mine at Kroger supermarket.

What’s annoyed me about it is that I thought it might be like the belgian raspberry beers etc., but unfortunately it’s just flavoured beer.

Tastes alright though… not too bad.

Reluctantly tried it last summer in Cleveland when my cousin offered it up to me whereas I became an instant addict and emptied his fridge . After replenishing the supply the next day, we emptied it again( visious cycle). At first it wasn’t available in mid michigan, but after discussing and recommending it to a few beer stores, they started ordering it. Now they can’t keep it on the shelves. I’m worried I will someday meet the same demise as Violet Beauregarde.
If Anheiser – Busch is wondering why their sales in Mid Michigan have spiked since last summer… now they know. There will probably also be a spike in Houston and Hastings Nebraska since Thanksgiving because a few more addicts from those areas were created at my house at that time.

  29. Wes said:

I just tried this beer, and man was it sweet. Excessively sweet. If you like a full-bodied, hop-heavy lager, this is not the drink for you. I was a bit taken aback by the pink head and grape juice color as well as by the aroma, and if it hadn’t said that it was a lager, I would have thought it was some weird flavored ale. It did say on the bottle’s side that it was a flavored ale, so I’m wondering exactly what Anheuser-Busch is trying to do by advertising one product as two different things. I don’t mind drinking it, but I certainly wouldn’t want it very often. It’s far too over-the-top for me in terms of flavor, and the 8% abv is certainly steep and can lead to an interesting night if you’re not careful.

That being said, it’s an interesting dessert beer and goes well with pie in my opinion. But it shouldn’t leave the realm of dessert unless you’re giving it to a girlfriend who prefers fruity drinks or doesn’t like beer.

  30. lunaticpunk said:

This beer rules … too bad its seasonal. I could drink it year round. Compared to all the other Blueberry beers don’t waste your money on them if you like this type of drink. This only one that taste similar is Leinenkugel’s Berry Weiss which is a very good replacement. If your not into sweet beer don’t drink this stuff.

  31. 8bitApril said:

I’m not a picky beer drinker.I’ll pick the cheapest beer. Price over taste. But this past week I’ve had a blueberry oatmeal lager that was thick and 7.5 vol. wasn’t too bad but too filling. So I picked up this “lager” I liked that it was twist off. And as usual to trying a new drink, I smelled it first. It has a strong blueberry sweet smell, but not a natural blueberry smell. (even though it states it’s all natural.) It’s thinner than lagers I’m use to and also very sweet. It’s like someone filled a half full beer bottle with grape and blueberry juice. It’s not bad, but it is strong though. So for those who would be considered a “cheapdate” be careful. 1 bottle gives a nice buzz. It’s stronger than it tastes, and for the price I’d get it again. Good for those who like fruity drinks like cider or smirnoff.

You guys must try Sweetwater Blue beer for the best blueberry beer ever! Very smooth, but still tastes like a beer. It is brewed in Atlanta, Georgia.

I tried this “beer” for the first time a few months ago. I thought the flavor was wonderful but as any human being might discover, I found that it did not taste like beer. Being a guy that does not mind the occasional sweet beverage.. perhaps my opinion does not conform with most.. but i will say that i enjoy the taste and the high alcohol percentage. … from a beer advocate perspective… no dice.. can’t taste the beer.. but I like it.

Doesn’t taste like beer, but it is good. I bought it on a whim, since I work in a grocery store and like to try new stuff. I would buy it again. I’ll save a bottle for the wife, since she likes the sweet stuff but isn’t really a beer drinker. Like Social Drinker said, can’t taste the beer, but I do like it. 3.5 of 5.

I think your review is right on. I actually didn’t believe that there were so many positive responses to the beer. Saw it in the grocery store and thought I’d give it a try. To me, it is a little too sweet..not really how I like my beers. And yes, it is STRONG. I could feel the alcohol kicking in after one bottle. Can’t say I hated it, but after trying it, I probably wouldn’t buy it again.

  40. april said:

I liked this beer. I hate beer and a friend told me to try wild blue. At first I still didn’t like it, but its worth the 8% and not a crappy taste to handle either. I will buy it again.

  41. john said:

Not a big fan of this one. I just kept thinking, “is this wine or is this beer?”. And as many others have stated, “yes it is a bit too sweet.” I’m not suprised to find out that this is put out by AB. I don’t intend on buying anymore.

  42. Gordon said:

This beer is OK, BUT I have to agree with the reviewer, it is no way as good as Blue Point Blueberry. If you like Blueberry beer I reccommend trying Blue Point.

  43. Bethany Culp said:

Last night, I couldn’t find my usual high-alcohol content beer, Golden Monkey, so I went for something new: Wild Blue. I was skeptical when I heard “blueberry beer,” because I’m really not into fruity drinks/beers, but at 8% alcohol I thought I’d give it a try. It took me about half an hour of complete taste-confusion to realize it was goddamn awesome. Yeah, it was sweet, and it’s nothing close to what I typically like in a beer (I’m a fan of porters and other beers that are so thick and bitter you could cut them with a knife).

Keeping an open mind, I ended up deciding Wild Blue is pretty damn acceptable stuff. The sweetness of the blueberry flavor was shocking at first, but it didn’t stick with me forever like the awfulness that is Mike’s Hard anything. I’d taste it, then the lager-y flavor kicked in and the sweet went away. I wasn’t haunted by blueberry all night. It also didn’t have that I’m-totally-gonna-kick-your-ass-and-we-both-know-it taste that a lot of high-alcohol content beers have, so it seems to have a tendency to sneak up on ya — but in a very good way. So yeah, Wild Blue. I totally get why it got terrible reviews, but I think it’s surprisingly decent. You just can’t drink it expecting it to be, well, beer.

If I ever have a friend over who claims to not like beer, Wild Blue might be a good gateway drink. And damn, you would NEVER know it’s 8% alcohol if it didn’t say so on the bottle, and then proceed to knock you flat on your ass. Never in a million years.

Its not a horrible beer… but I agree in that it doesnt taste, look, or really have anything in common with a beer. I will personally stick to bud select, or whatever else is around before drinking this again, however if I have nothing else, I suppose I could drink it, though Id have to keep it in the bottle because the color would bug me.

  47. Paul H said:

My kid recommended this to me after having tried it at college. Although it’s quite a different taste, perhaps an acquired one, I actually like this stuff. It’s not a brew I’d drink with a meal, but it IS a sit-n-chill kinda brew….more likened unto a malted blueberry wine. The 8% ABV gives it a nice kick, and overcomes the heavy blueberry flavor. Were the alcohol content any less, it wouldn’t be right. I wanted something different, unique, and enjoyable for a change…and for someone who wasn’t satisfied with the status quo of brewski’s, THIS hit the spot for me.

  48. Paul H said:

For anybody wanting this stuff in Cobb County, GA….I got mine at Sherlock’s on Barrett Pkwy for just under 8 bucks. They didn’t have it displayed, but DID have it chillin’ in the cooler, and were happy to go get me a 6-pack. Give ‘em your business.

This is an amazing beer. It took me a few of them to get used to it, but the 8% made me force myself. Now I buy it everyday and it is my favorite. I used to drink Sierra Nevada or Redhook IPA, but got tired of the bitter stuff. Girls that don’t like beer, really like this too. If it is your goal to get a girl tipsy, this is the way to go. In Virginia you can find it at Farm Fresh, Kroger and Harris Teeter. In California I have only found it at Albertson’s, but I asked my local liquor store guy to stock it and 2 days later he had it on his shelf. Just ask, they are more than happy to accomodate regular customers.

I’ve been drinking Wild Blue for a year or so now and I kind of consider it as one of my guilty pleasures. It’s not necessarily a beer that I’d enjoy on every occasion, but when I’m in the mood it hits the spot every time. I’m very surprised that it has so many negative reviews. I’m equally surprised when people liken the flavor to grape drink of some kind. Personally I think this stuff is delicious!! It’s like you’re tasting blueberry in HD lol. I think that if you drink this with an open mind and don’t dwell on the fact that it is beer, you will enjoy it much much more! I hope they keep making this beer for a long time ‘cuz every now and then I’m in the mood for some yummy blueberry goodness!

@JD1620 – Thanks for the comment. You’re right, but at the time I reviewed this beer I was thinking ‘beer’ and got grape juice! I’m currently drinking “Wild Blue” as I type this comment and I must say I agree 100% with your review. It is a very red wine-beer hybrid (and honestly I am a huge white wine fan) and frankly I’m not a fan.

I expected Wild Blue to be something along the lines of BEER with a hint of blueberry (which is what Sea Dog Blue is like, which is THE best blueberry beer you can try…I suggest you try it…it’s a New England beer brewed in Maine…I guarantee you will love it!).

The beer was too sweet and I like beer to be a little hoppy with a smooth after taste and all Wild Blue is is sweet fermented grape juice.

  69. Clarkie said:

I agree with the folks that say this isn’t even beer. As I type this I am drinking a Sea Dog Wild Blueberry Wheat Ale, which is what a “beer” should taste like. It seems that most of the positive responses posted here are people that: 1. Are not real beer fans/drinkers, or 2. Just want to get drunk and buy it for the 8% alcohol content. I find it VERY hard to believe that AB calls this a a beer, a lager, and an ale when in fact is simply blueberry flavored water. It may taste good but please don’t call it beer, its not. Call it wine, or a wine cooler, or something else.

  70. Scott-TheBrewClub said:

Clarkie – no argument from me! I thought it tasted like bad wine, and I’m glad you caught the lager/ale classification on the label. How can it be both??? I do see Wind Blue in more and more places now, so I think its becoming more popular. I think there are better blueberry beers than this one though.

I’ve been drinking Wild Blue for about 2 years. It is simply the best “beer” to let people who hate beer try. I for one enjoy a nice thick stout but on a weekend when the weather is hot and the humidity is up near the 100% echelon I tend to want something that sits just right on the palette and leaves you feeling good at the same time.

I’m sick and tired of the wussy beers that requires 5 beers before you have that nice euphoric feeling of a buzz and I’m a lightweight. 2 wild blues is where I draw the line. Any more and I’m done for however the fact that it only takes 2 gives it my approval

Okay beer snobs, this brew was obviously not made for you. There is no point in trying to discuss the quality of its hops or its lovely color. It’s a flavored alcoholic beverage. That’s it, nothing more, nothing less! Well there is more of a kick to it though. Especially if you drink it the way we do…pour a shot of blueberry flavored vodka in a frozen glass before you pour in the Wild Blue! We call this a Boo-Berry. Don’t leave home if you drink more than 2 of these though. I love’em but when I have a hankering for a good beer, I drink a good beer. When I want a refreshing beverage with a hardy kick I drink a Boo-Berry! It’s good for what “ale’s” you.

@Matley – you’re right about that – wild blue isn’t all that complex or interesting, but it is indeed a flavored (stronly) alcohol beverage. Interesting beer cocktail you suggest. Thanks for popping in!

Matley, I’m glad you like it but the whole point of us beer “snobs” as you call us is that Wild Blue is not and should not be labeled a beer. At best it should be labeled a wine cooler or a hard cider. For Anheuser Busch to call it a Lager and an Ale on the same label points to either gross ingnorance or a blatant lie to rope in idiots who will only drink it because of its high alcohol content so they can get drunk and act like bigger idiots.

def seems more like a wine cooler malt something than a beef. gives a decent buzz after two (imma small man) but it feels dirty, kinda like red stripe. it’s a great entry level beer for the next generation.

You should try Wachusett Blueberry. A friend brought it back from MA for me to try a while ago and it was delicious. I’m not sure where you are, but unfortunately this is only available in the NE.

  80. Scott-TheBrewClub said:

Thanks for the tip Mike. I’m always up for a good blueberry ale! Recently had a good one from Maine (link below) but I don’t think I’ve seen Wachusett here in Jersey. I head up to NE a few time a year, so I’ll look for it next time!

Sea Dog is the best blueberry beer I’ve had so far bar none. The Ellicottville Brewery blueberry which is made by Southern Tier Brewing is also very good.

@Clarkie – thanks for the tip! I didn’t know ST made beer for other labels, but I’ll look for it. Those guys seem to know what they are doing when it comes to beer!

I don’t like beer and I don’t like blueberries. I like Margarita.Took the AB tour in Jacksonville. Now I know why certain beers give me a headache. Ales do- Lagers don’t. Tried the Wild Blue 2x. Now it’s my favorite drink. Love it. For you 12 pack drinkers, you only need a six pack of these.

I am not a beer girl in the least little bit, never liked wine either. I had a friend pass last year and he drank wine all the time, and during that time we had a drink in his memory, and low and behold I found Riesling and Moscato.
Anyways back to beer. Never have I cared for beer, until yesterday! I went to a Wedding in Canada, and the brides had me tasting all their flavored beers. First was wild blue, then Leinenkugel’s Berry Weiss, then Lindemans Framboise Raspberry Lambic. Leinenkugel is my favorite of the 3. But the Wild Blue if found in my area (Metro Detroit) will definately be on my list. I have found 3 beers that agree with my taste buds!

I see people saying they can’t get this Wild Blue. I don’t know why, it’s made by the folks at Bud and available nation wide. My opinion of Wild Blue is like many here that do drink beer- tastes like a grape soda. Too sweet to drink more than one. The other blue berry beers, such as from Blue Point or Sea Dog are MUCH better. I had a hard time finding anyone that would drink this stuff!! Only one friend drank it and he did just to get drunk (he’s not really a beer connoisseur).

  86. Scott-TheBrewClub said:

@Tom, I agree, I see this stuff just about everyplace I go. If a place doesn’t have it, the can likely get it! +100 on the Blue Point and Sea Dog being superior blueberry ales. Cheers!

I should’ve known that an AB product wouldn’t be good, but I tried anyway. I normally drink Smithwicks, Guinness, & occasionally Corona (extra lime & salt). I took a recommendation from someone who likes to drink Wild Blue to get drunk.

It tastes like nasty skunky beer with fake blueberry juice mixed in. AWFUL! I had to pour it out. Glad I only bought a single bottle to try it. Seriously, I’d rather drink Boones or Natural Light than this stuff. I can’t believe how many people are out there with such horrible taste that like this crap…baffling.

  88. Scott-TheBrewClub said:

@Miss K – I had similar sentiments about this beer, I think many people drink it, as you say, to get drunk on it or perhaps to just try it. I don’t think too many people keep Wild Blue in their fridge as their regular beer.

I’m drinking this beer right now and I have to say, I’m really enjoying it. It’s got a nice kick to it. It’s kinda sweet, but not too sweet to be considered a wine or anything like that. It’s strong enough to get you buzzed in just one or two bottles. Personally, I’d buy it again, but I wouldn’t consider my regular or my favorite beer.

It’d recommend it if you want to offer it to women or something like that as well.

  90. Scott-TheBrewClub said:

@Jose – thanks for the comment! For some reason I hear a lot of people suggest this beer for women and I’m not sure why! From what I recall, it definitely does not taste like any typical beer and maybe that’s it? To me, it tasted like fermented grape juice!

Been drinking Wild Blue for quite a while now- I veer off the Blue every once in a while to taste other flavored beers but nothing compares- not only taste wise but alcohol content wise- not that it’s that much but still 2 of these beers & I feel fine! I’ve turned on alot of friends to this beer & either they get hooked or not quite sure what to think about this beer that’s tasty but can’t possibly be a beer!- So they go back to drinking Bud! Anyway, my reccommendation is to at least try it & if you’re hooked keep buying it in your local beer cave or just keep drinking whatever suits your taste buds… just drink responsibly!

  92. Scott-TheBrewClub said:

@Tobi – great points! Go with what you like, but be open to at least try it. (I did and didn’t care for it) As you said, go with whatever works but always be responsible!

This stuff is FANTASTIC! It is my new FAVORITE beer! I was actually sort of depressed last weekend when my local liquor store RAN OUT! They assured me that they would order more, and I am having a bottle as I write…

Rock on Spankmaster! It’s a good feeling when you find a beer that clicks! :-)
