Blue Moon – Honey Moon – Summer Ale Review
May 22, 2008
During my last trip to my favorite beer place, I spotted some of the seasonal “Summer Ale” made by Blue Moon called Honey Moon. I knew that The Brew Club would be doing a “Summer Beer” exchange soon, so I thought I’d jump the gun and grab me a pack of Blue Moon’s Honey Moon before any of the other Brew Club members got to it!
So far, I’ve been pretty happy with other Blue Moon offerings I’ve tried like the lime-flavored Blue Moon “Rising Moon” spring beer, and prior to The Brew Club I tried their Winter Ale, which was nice as well. So, using my (to me) proper Beer-Pouring method, I sat down to try Blue Moon’s Honey Moon!
Pouring the Honey Moon into my official beer-tasting glass resulted in a big cream-colored foamy head that took a little time to go down, but it did and a second pour was enough to fill the glass. Honey Moon is, for lack of a better description, a nice golden-honey color. It was slightly cloudy, and as I swirled the beer around in the glass a bit it left a decent amount of lacing.
The label states that Honey Moon has “…clover honey, fresh orange peel and both pale and white wheat malts…” Sounds nice, right? Well, the Blue Moon Honey Moon is a nice beer! Typical, I think, is Blue Moon’s subtle style of getting the right amounts of flavor into the beer without overdoing it.
When you drink the Honey Moon, you aren’t going to say “hey, this is an orange flavored beer – blaaagh!” No, its just a nice bit of orange, and just a little taste of honey in there too, much like the “Rising Moon” spring ale is not overpowered with lime like some lime-flavored beers. Subtle is the key. There was no burn or bite whatsoever drinking this stuff – smooth going down.
The Honey Moon was a little heavy in the mouth, but it was not heavy “tasting” if you know what I’m saying. I can certainly see why Honey Moon makes a nice Summer Ale if you are buying the marketing behind seasonal beers! That being said, this beer would be enjoyable any time of the year – in case you want to stock up on some for football season!
I have to say that I’m impressed with the Honey Moon Summer Ale by Blue Moon, and I would buy it again for myself or offer it to a friend without a doubt. Good stuff for Summer, or any time of year!

Blue Moon Brewing is owned by Molson-Coors, the people who bring you Coors and Coors light, among other big beers. They don’t really publicize this, as they are trying to break into the “craft” market. That being said, they have had some success with their Blue Moon beers winning several awards and are reviewed well here as well.

“Belgian style” beer is like a “Russian style” car.

Do they still sell the blueberry beer? I tried it at the wine fest in Watkins Glen. The beer was awsome. Can I find it in VT?
