Pilsner Urquell is hands down my favorite beer in the world. Nothing comes close to it. Also I was not a big fan of Staropramen. It left a horrible feeling in my mouth every time I was forced to drink it. Also it was one of the cheapest beers in the Czech Republic, meaning it was not that great. Gambrinus is similar to Pilsner, good but not as good. Anyway if you are ever in Prague, look up a place called "The Pub". You pour your own beer from your table and compete with other tables and other pubs around the country. Worth going to at least once

While PU may be less hoppy than it once was, the bottles I tasted for this review were hoppy enough for me. Perhaps, being closer to the Czech Republic, it was slightly fresher.

I enjoyed your review of Lagunitas Pilsner as I agree with you that the hoppy aroma is something that too many craft brewers go over the top on. Dry Hopping is not appropriate for a pilsner.

Hops (especially Saaz hops) are probably the most expensive ingredient used in brewing, and the easiest one to cut back on. This is something I'll be mentioning in an upcoming review of another Czech classic - Staropramen.

This is a good beer. Just had it on tap the other night. I also totally agree about the lime, lemon, or any other citrus thing in a beer, especially wheats.

There are few larger beer perversions than the American macro versions of Pilsner, even some of the crafts are just OK. Check out this review we just did on such a beer.

Hopefully, with name like Bob the Brit, you will appreciate Michael Jackson's saying that even Pilsner Urquell has been somewhat de-hopped...probably because of the butterfly effect of American Pilsners. That is a fast change seeing as how recent Pilsner is as a stlye. The best Pilsner that I've had to this point has to be Jever. I just really like that it stayed hoppy.

Good review with some great background info. While I'm typically tempted by a good ale over a lager, the more craft breweries produce pilsners as expressive as the Urquell, the sooner pilsners will earn back some respect as a worthy style. Thanks for your thoughts!
