Hi Steve,

thanks for the updates, the story was as correct as I could ascertain when I wrote it back in 2009. And in my defense I didn't claim that Staro was still being brewed in oak.

And while the demise of traditional techniques is regrettable (and inevitable), the fact remains that Staro is still not being brewed under licence in the UK as so many 'premium' lagers (Stella Artois, Kronenbourg, Sam Adams) are.

It's worth seeking out Michael Jackson's 'Beerhunter' video from Pilsen before the oak vessels were replaced.

And yes, I have reviewed a Herold brew for The Brewclub, check out "two dark czech lagers" <a href="http://thebrewclub.com/2009/06/24/two-dark-czech-lagers/" title="Two Dark Czech Lagers" rel="nofollow"></a>

I hate to be a party pooper, but this story is in fact untrue: InterBev has gotten rid of the "oak barrels" and Staropramen is made in a large industrial brewery to maximize profits and cut corners, e.g. they no longer brew it as it was done in times before the Velvet Revolution. I live in Prague and know many, many Czech beer lovers. These are not expats: these are native Czechs, and they say Staropramen is shit beer--beer they never drink--because it no longer is brewed the traditional way since InterBev took over.

It was not 1 or 2 native Czechs that told me this---but numerous Czechs! Even Pilsner Urquell is also not being brewed in its traditional brewery in Plsen; it is now switching to an industrial, hi-volume/low cost brewing technique.

Sorry to bring you the bad news, but at least you now know the truth of the demise of Staropramen since capitalism came to Prague :-(

...ending on a positive note the one brand in Czech Republic which many native Czechs give begrudging respect to is Bernard. Here is their website, it is not an old beer label, but nonetheless they brew their beer in an unpasteurized, traditional method--
http://www.bernard.cz/en/story/brewery.shtml

Like I said, hate to break it to ya but Staropramen is considered the equivalent of "Old Milwaukee" back in the states LOL.

Happy drinking, cheers,

@Kimberly - yep, its worked many times for me. If one person is asking for it, chances are other people will buy it too so it isn't like they'd be stuck with it. Good luck!

@Kimberly - How thoughtful! Where do you live??? (State)

Be sure to ask a manager if they can get it - many times stores can get a beer for you even if it isn't something they normally stock. Its worth a shot!

Though I haven't had an opportunity to taste the original, and I cannot compare them, I have to say that this one brewed in Croatia is excellent.
Which is not the case for many other beers brewed 'under licence' in our region (Balkans), like Heineken, Carlsberg, Tuborg, Stella Artois, ...

Thanks for the news @prenj, even if it's sad news.

I guess the fact that they stayed true to the contract terms for ten years should be considered a result. And anyone who has read my other postings on this site will be fully aware of my views on beers being brewed 'under licence' - away from their (ahem) spiritual home.

Unfortunately, Staropramen is not brewed only in Prag any more, it's brewed in Croatia as well

Nice job again Bob. I think last time I called you Rob (sorry). It is sad to see when companies take out their wooden fermenters or storage vessel. I know numerous people who have told me that Pilsner Urquell was never quite the same when SAB bought them out and replaced wood with stainless steel. It's terrible when "progress" is really regress and you end up with a flattening out of beers. Some progress seems to be even colder than the coldest lager.
