Whats Your Favorite Mexican Beer?

Date May 1, 2009

Well, April is now finished and The Brew Club had a great time focusing the month of April on English Ales.  Now, its already May (can you believe it?) and we all know that for many people, May means Cinco de Mayo and Mexican Beer!

Cinco de Mayo Mexican Beer Reviews

The Brew Club has reviewed several Mexican Beers in the past, and hopefully our reviews will help you decide what Mexican Beer you’ll pick up for your Cinco de Mayo celebrations! I’m even more hopeful that you’ll be more adventurous this year and perhaps try a different Mexican beer than the one you’ve been drinking all along.  (You know who you are!)

SO – being the curious type of people that we are, we wanted to know from our readers, What’s Your Favorite Mexican Beer? Why not take our little poll over in the sidebar and let us know?  Even better, why not take the poll and share a comment at the bottom of the post about your favorite Mexican beer, and why you like it so?  Our ‘What’s Your Favorite Mexican Beer’ poll will be up for the whole month of May, so check back and see what happens!

So far, The Brew Club has reviewed Pacifico, Negra Modelo, Dos XX Amber, Dos Equis Lager, Tecate, and of course Corona Extra.  Bear in mind, these beer reviews are from The Brew Club’s early days so they’re a little less polishMexican Style Beer Kited – but still a good read I think.  Hopefully, we’ll be able to add at least a few more to our list this month.

Any suggestions?

And while you’re here, why not consider making your own Mexican-style beer with the Mexican Cerveza Package from Cooper’s!

Of the widely available beers, Bohemia used to be my favorite. But as my tastes have drifted to darker brews, I know prefer Negro Modelo.

@Celtic Mom – Thanks for the comment!

@bea – I just had a Bohemia (review soon) and thought it was OK. I think I prefer Negra Modelo too, but I’m getting less and less interested in the mass-produced Mexican beers in general I think.

You’re right, Scott. Mass produced is mass produced. But what else are you usually going to be able to order in a Mexican restaurant, right?

@bea – It does work with Tex-Mex, and I’ll order it if I have to, but if it happens to be a BYOB type of Mexican place, I bring a nice APA or IPA which goes GREAT with Mexican food!

Pacifico, hands down the most crisp refreshing beer on a hot summer day. Recently tried Victoria, liked it ok, not as crisp, maybe a little lite. Avoid Corona at all costs, skunky and overcommercialized.

Thanks Dwayne for your thoughts! I’d agree on the Corona avoidance, but I think I’d downgrade Pacifico a little since the first time I tried it. Still good though.

I am fortunate enough to live in the crazy state of Texas where we have more Mexican beer choices than most non-border states. I am partial to negra modelo but never say no to dos equis. Bohemia isn’t one of my favorites although alot of people seem to like it. Fortunately I’m heading down to Brasil in 12 days and among other things, estou indo bebendo muitos chopp quando eu chegar ai. We don’t see too much Brasillian cerveja here in the US. O que pena. But I will gladly share ny own preferences when I get there.

@jonathan- thanks for sharing! I hope you have a great trip and have some great beer as well!

Your expertise in Texas leaves me assured (after our two-year blog on this subject) that Negra Modela is probably the best of the easily available beers on the market in the taste buds of beer affectionados.

@bea – Yeah, this post has some long legs! Glad to see you’re following the updates!

There is a new import from Mexico’s Cerveceria Modelo, It is called Montejo and it is a good tasting beer. To me it tastes like a very mild Sam Adam’s Boston Lager, which makes Montejo a very drinkable beer.
