@Barry M, thanks again for all the smoked beer tips! I actually have one by Boulder Brewing Co out in Colorado that I'll eventually try to see what its all about. Then perhaps some of the others you mention! Great review BTW, I read it last night.

Was just thinking, if you like really smokey beers, try to get your hands on the Brauerei Rittmayer Smokey George. They don't seem to make it often, and it's tough to get, but was probably the most intensely smoked German beer I've had. Peat-smoked malt gives a big punch!

Beck-Bräu Affumicator is also a wonderful beer, rich with smokey bacon flavours (oh yeah!) at 9.2% ABV, but dangerously drinkable. A small description down the page here.

Billy, smoked beers are not to everyone's taste. I didn't like Schlenkerla the first time I had it. By the third one I loved it :D

I haaated this beer..and I was really upset at myself for not liking it. It must have been one of those things where I had bad experience with something similar in the past and it came back to haunt me because I couldn't take more than a few sips. If I was alone I would have guessed it was a bad bottle, but my friend had it and said it was fine. I'll give it another shot sometime soon. Glad you like it though Bob.

This is an intense smoked beer. Stone Porter is much less up front. I think this Marzen is maybe the best, though they have a Wheat, Lager, Urbock, and a Lent (I've not had the lent). They are intense but certainly worth a try. Who would have thunk it? Smoke beers. What a vast world beer is.

I'm eventually going to have to try this - I've probably seen this beer a thousand times and never looked twice. Could be a smoky treat for the holidays.

Nice post! It's a classic beer that. Like drinking smoked ham, and not at all as weird as that might sound. I have a fondness for the Spezial beers too, but the Schlenkerla Märzen is, for me, like a benchmark for smokiness.

My own humble review is here, and a blind tasting I ran with my German colleagues of a few Rauchbiers here, including the Märzen.
