What makes you think the yeast in the kit is no good? In my kit, it was just a little packet that comes with the kit. You have to sprinkle it onto the 'wort' which is what you get when you mix the warm water with the stuff in the concentrate kit.

There should also be a little 'best-by' date stamped on the little yeast packet, mine was sometime in 2010. I don't think you'll know if the yeast is good or not until you use it and the fermentation process starts, which takes some time depending on the temperature of your mixture.

Are you saying you added the yeast to your mixture and nothing happened, or is the yeast packed damaged somehow?

I'm no pro @ home brewing, and I only did it the one time so far with the kit, but it did turn out well - I'll help you as much as I can but that might not be too much!

Scott, glad to see you brewing some beer! good first step. Your gonna have a lot more fun when you take the next step up to extract brewing, where you get unhopped wort(the think syrup), steep specialty grains, and add fresher hops. Then there is the step up to all grain, where to answer don's question, is making the wort yourself.

It really is such an easy thing to do. the next steps up I mentioned are no more difficult then you already. Just a bit more equipment and a couple more things to do, but not harder. You come down and brew with me and I'll show you!

@Don, I'm pretty sure you can use the same equipment to make your own stuff, but I'm not positive about that. The fermenter is certainly of good quality, (and that's most of the kit really!) so besides to buying your own ingredients to mix and measure - I don't see why not.

Jim, I used my EX Bake Oven to practice before advancing to this level. Anyway, that's the idea. For me, I'm just trying to learn about the process without having to worry about all the other stuff that brewing with grains requires. Right now, time is also at a premium for me so this works in that regard as well.

A question for you Scott. It echoes Jim's comment too. Can you make your own wort, not from a can? I would think that is where things could get fun. Can you use the coopers kit in this fashion? Or do you need to buy the can every time?

Sounds like fun, Scott. I have to admit, dumping a can of hoppy malted syrup into a jug and sprinkling in some powders sounds more like an EX Bake Oven than brewing like a big boy, but this is probably the smart way to start. It's important to get the basics down pat before playing with grains.
