I have a hard time justifying anything over $20. Even if it's something I know I'll like, such as Devil Dancer, Oaked Arrogant Bastard, etc. This is for all the reasons previously mentioned.

I do wish to add one more factor: The Wife Factor. If I blow a lot of cash on a single beer she is more likely to be pissed than if I spend that same amount over many beers. Not that she would have me or her drink the cheap stuff, but she would like our money to go as far as it can.

True, Peter. I still have a set limit, and I've never bought a bottle of beer anywhere near the $60-$100 range! Not to say I've tried any beers in that price range, but I agree with you in principle - I mean how much better can it really be? My palate isn't that well developed, so I stick to the occasional $20 bomber but that's about it.

funny you say that Scott. I've gone the opposite direction. A year ago I would not have blinked about dropping 60-100 on a bottle of beer. Now, it's just not worth it. once you taste this price gouged eBay beers, you realize how little difference there is between the $$$ beer and a $12 beer.

For me, I won't spend moe the 20 on a bottle and that is going to be a stretch now.

Funny how things come full circle :)

@Anthony - Yeah, I thought it interesting as well with a couple of years of beer purchases since the post. Well, I'd have to say I've still not bought a bottle of the DFH Worldwide Stout, the Utopias, nor have I tried to get a $100 bottle of Founders Canadian Breakfast Stout on e-Bay! I try to resist the hype!

But, something like the Chocolate Bock for $12 I wouldn't think twice about now, and I make purchases in that range all the time now, but I still have a limit, although a little bit higher.

I enjoyed the repost of this. Now that I feel that I know a whole lot more about beer I would spend more than I would say, when this was first posted. Right now I have some Dogfish Worldwide Stouts aging for when some friends come over and I paid $9 but they are only 12 oz bottles. They are 18% and like you said, it would be a once in a great while thing. I told my wife that I would like Sam's Utopia for our 10 anniversary (which is 5 years from now so she can save up lol). This would be a once in a lifetime thing, however.

I'd agree - I think beer is a hell of a value compared to some of the other choice drinks available.

I think it's all a matter of perspective.

For example, in comparison to those wine lovers out there beer, even the most expensive bottles, is a pure bargain. Additionally, being from British Columbia, I am subject to some of the worst liquor laws in North America. A bottle of Old Rasputin 12 currently retails for close to 25 dollars with taxes. That's not even a world class mind blowing beer, and I bought two.

In the grand scheme of things being a hardcore beer lover can become expensive like any hobby. However, when you look at it next to some of the Whiskey and Wine lovers out there - we get off easy.

Thanks Don - looking forward to reading about it. I just hope its not a beer that doesn't live up to the hype!

Just picked up some Life and Limb the collaboration between Sierra Nevada and Dogfish Head. It pushed the limits of what I am willing to pay at $9.00 for a 24 oz bottle. Probably wouldn't have thought twice about it, but I had to pick one up for Jim too. $20 after tax for 2 bottles of beer is more than I'm really interested in, but I've heard some pretty amazing things about this brew. I'm looking forward to it. Of course you'll see our thoughts on the web site when we write it up.
