Rare Vos was my least favorite of the 5 Ommegang beers I've had so far. On top is Three Philosophers Belgian Style Blend followed by Chocolate Indulgence.

@Don Duvel technically owns Ommegang so a lot of true Belgian influence goes into their brews.

I too really liked this one and just like Ommegang in general.

I started my journey into craft beer with Belgians, and one of those was Rare Vos. While I appreciate Ommegong for their value and Belgian roots, Rare Vos always struck me as a cut rate beer. It's not in the same league as Chimay or some of the other Ommegang beers for that matter. They make better stuff than this.

@Michael and @Brian - thanks for the feedback. So far, I've really enjoyed everything I've tried from Ommegang, I just couldn't wrap my head around the Rare Vos for some reason. Right now I'm actually enjoying (very much so) the Ommegang Chocolate Indulgence. Very nice chocolate stout so they are back in my good graces! ;-)

My wife got me a big bottle of this for Christmas and I really liked it. On a scale of 1 - 5, I would have given it a 3.5. I have yet to have a beer from Ommegang that I wouldn't want to buy again. The Rare VOS wasn't my favorite Ommegang beer but I did really enjoy it

I personally like this one better than what you rated it. I will say that I feel I was being gracious in my review of it, though. Here's what I thought of it. http://thankheavenforbeer.com/2009/10/10/ommegang-rare-vos/

Don, I'd agree with you except that these Ommegang folks are part of the Duvel 'family'. I suspect that of any Domestic brewer of Belgian style beers, these guys would come as close as possible to the 'real deal'. Or, I could be completely wrong!

This was a really tough beer to review for some reason. I couldn't nail it down but something just didn't gel with it for me.

Thanks for popping in!

Scott, I've grown to be a little suspect of Belgian beers crafted in America. I'm not sure if it is the brewing process in the states (might have more regulation) or the fact that we don't have hundreds of years of history with the yeast strains and the brewing process for Belgians, or if it is the fact that our master brewers just don't deal with the style exclusively, but Belgian beers from Belgium seem to be the better of the brews IMO.
