@Royce - Bob the Brit is my partner in crime here @ The Brew Club. He lives in the UK and has access to a lot oaf beers that I normally don't see, and vice-versa. Bob also brings a certain wisdom to the site that only experience brings! I on the other hand, live in lovely New Jersey!

Meant to comment that the Tactical Nuclear Penguin looks interesting, and despite your review I feel compelled to try it... 32% beers don't grow on trees after all. I'll split the cost of a bottle with some friends and we'll all treat it like an educational experience.

The right way to approach that beer?

Where are you located? And what did the Paradox Isle of Arran cost in your neighborhood? Cause for me in Los Angeles it was $12 for a single 12oz bottle... which is VERY expensive for a single beer.

You also described a lot more flavor that I experienced. I noticed a lot of subtle flavors that you mention - the coffee, caramel, chocolate, slight bourbon or whisky - but they were all very subtle. The body was not nearly as full and robust as I expected. It was balanced but the flavor profile did not have the complexity I expected; a beer that costs $12 for 12oz and comes out of whisky casks came with an expectation of very interesting flavor transition on the palate. That never materialized.

If this beer was even half the cost I'd have felt very differently. If it was 1/4th the cost I would've been a big fan. But for what it cost me there's no way I can justify the experience of this beer.

Bob, I was thinking you might enjoy the TNP, because you liked the Tokio Stout so well. But it just goes to show that not all brews are created equal, and I think to this point I have read more bad reviews of TNP than good ones. It will be interesting to see if they continue to make it once the novelty wears off.

I would think having beer described a tasting like “the liquid you get if you leave an ashtray out in the rain” would make me hesitant to try it! Funny how we can all imagine what that might taste like without actually having tried it (I hope)

Bob - you hit the nail on the head. All style and no substance on the TNP. It's an awful beer and it's obvious that sacrifices were made to achieve the lofty ABV it has. I wrote about it last month on B&WB and came to a very similar conclusion. Still folks defended it in the comments, which will probably happen here as well. : http://wp.me/pBL4g-hw

I've heard some not so great reviews of this beer, but better ones of Sink the Bismark. I still want to try it and hopefully will in the next couple of weeks.

BTW, great quote, "the liquid you get if you leave an ashtray out in the rain!" That doesn't paint a pretty picture or very good flavor....

I have a bottle of the Paradox Isle of Arran right now. I'm thinking of waiting on it a bit.

But I can completely see why you said that about TNP. I have heard many people say it is not a beer. I have the same feeling about Utopias. I actually want to try StB more because it is more along an IPA style on roids. I think I can take the obscene amount of hops a lot easier.
