Happy Birthday to Us!

Date April 21, 2010

Here we are, getting ready to wrap-up our second annual ‘English Ale Month’ here at The Brew Club when I realized that today, April 21 is the second anniversary of our very first beer review!  Yep, we’re 2!

The Brew Club 2 yearsTo quickly rehash, The Brew Club started out as a way to keep track of the beer exchanges that 6 coworkers did every other week or so at work.  The site quickly turned into a little beer review blog, and it gave me the opportunity to learn about beer, as well as learn a little about running a blog and all of the little fun techie parts of that.

So, its been a learning experience for sure!  But I’ve also had the good fortune to interact and learn from some very informed and interesting people in the ‘beer blogosphere’ along the way. Looking back, I think that’s the best part.

In that regard, I’d like to direct your attention to our ‘Friends‘ page where you will find all of the aforementioned ’special people’.  In particular though, I’d like to thank Mike of Mike Loves Beer, Michael and Nate of Thank Heaven For Beer, Peter of Simply Beer, Don and Jim of Beer And Whiskey Brotherhood who are all great people and have helped make this so much fun!

Its also a blast for me to read  and respond to the comments that you leave.  Your comments, questions and criticisms are what keep this site alive – THANKS!!!

I also can’t go without mentioning my friend, Bob The Brit who freely offered his time and insights on beer from a Brit’s perspective.  He’s truly a member of The Brew Club.  Even though I’ve not Bob in person, I hope I can one day.

I’d also like to thank the original Brew Club members – Liz, Melissa, Heather, Gerry, Neil and myself (especially :-) ).  While we don’t exchange beers as often as we used to, and two members have moved on, The Brew Club remains!  I should really get a group picture posted someday.

So where’s The Brew Club headed then?  Well, I’m not sure.  For two years now we’ve been cranking out about 3 beer reviews or other beer related posts per week.  That’s 12 posts per month and about 144 posts per year.  I know many beer blogs do more, some do less, but that’s been our pace.  Still, it is a ton of work, and so I think I’m going to scale the pace back a little bit and refocus some of my energy on things that have been needing my time and attention.

It’s not a huge change, but the more I think of it the more I like the format that Chris over at 52Brews has.  One post per week is something I can do, and if I have the time and energy you’ll see 2, but I think we’re going to move away from 3 per week at the moment.  Hopefully, you’ll stick around!  We’ll still be active on Twitter and you can always “Like” us on Facebook.

I’m also considering changing the theme in the upcoming year, but that’s a real pain too sometimes!  The main thing to me is that the site stays fun (for me) and useful to you.  Once it becomes neither of those things, I’ll shut it down.

So, that’s the status of The Brew Club on our second anniversary!  Hopefully we’re going to have an even better third year, meet even more great beer people, and try many more great beers!

Thanks for being part of it!

New Jersey Beer BookAs a reward for reading this far down the page we’re going to offer a very special prize! Just leave a comment wishing The Brew Club a happy birthday and what you like about us (or not), and we will randomly select someone who will get a free, autographed copy of Jersey Brew – The Story of Beer in New Jersey, and possibly some other stuff like a party hat.

Quick and easy rules

1) Must live in the 48 contiguous United States (sorry Alaska and Hawaii people :-( ).

2) Must leave comment before our next scheduled post on the morning of Friday, April 23, 2010 to be considered.

Provided you leave a valid email in the post, I’ll contact the winner and work out the details.  Good luck, and thanks for your support!

Happy Birthday to the Brew Club! My site will be two in a couple months so I guess that makes you my big brother. Make sure you lead by example because I look up to you and am easily impressionable.

Congrats on two years, Scott. The third year is when you really start making the big blog bucks, so start picking out a Mercedes!

    Congratulations Scott.

From a personal perspective, writing for The Brewclub has rekindled my interest in the better beers available, and encouraged me to try new and (for the most part) interesting brews.

I’ve enjoyed being able to share some views from Europe, and also to learn about which American brews to look out for.

I still have a shelf full of exotics brews from the UK and Europe, so will continue to write my ramblings until my liver gives out, or Scott tells me to stop!

    Bob the Brit.

oh.. and Jim, I already have a Mercedes… can I have another?

And thanks for the mention! When I started THFB, I didn’t know that other beer blogs existed (how naive!). TBC was the first I started reading.

Looks like Wolfman K gets the autographed copy of “Jersey Brew”. Congrats, its a very interesting read!
