Remembering Michael Jackson
August 30, 2010
August 30th 2010 marks the third anniversary of the passing of ‘The Beerhunter’ – Michael Jackson.
While his death was marked with less pomp than the passing of the other Michael Jackson, I suggest that anybody who enjoys quality beer (and why are you here if you don’t enjoy quality beer?) owes a debt of gratitude to the Beer Hunter.
For some forty years he promoted the cause of quality beers, and is credited with helping kick start the American craft brewing movement.
As I wrote here two years ago, the world was diminished by his passing, the world of beer even more so.
So, this evening, if an excuse is needed, settle down quietly with a beer you enjoy and drink a toast to the Beer Hunter.
Cheers Michael!

I like Michael Jackson. He really did quite a bit for craft beer. I really enjoyed this video that Nate over at THFB found. Good stuff.

@Big Tex – thanks for posting the link! I’ll confess to not even knowing about Michael Jackson until Bob the Brit enlightened me. He really had quite the impact on the quality beer movement and certainly deserves all the praise.

Right on Bob (I’m guessing Bob the Brit wrote this piece),
This article short and well to the point. Like everyone else, this is one guy I wish I could go back in time to meet.
His shoes seem like the type that can’t be filled, though many are trying. From what I’ve read, he’s a humble guy, and didn’t really refer to himself as an expert. I like that.

@nate, you would be correct this was Bob’s post. I also liked his demeanor, he didn’t come off as pretentious or snobby.

Humble is a good word @Nate. Whenever I was fortunate enough to meet him he always emphasised that it was the beer that was important.
And he had a wry sense of humour. When I first attended a tutored tasting hosted by Michael he opened by apologising to any present who were disappointed that instead of an American singer of indeterminate colour, they got a middle aged Yorkshireman. He then proceeded to don a sequinned glove, in the hope it would lessen their disappointment!
