Bullalo Bill’s Blueberry Oatmeal Stout
February 15, 2011
Bullalo Bill’s Blueberry Oatmeal Stout is something I’ve been wanting to try for awhile but was hesitant because I was still iffy from their Pumpkin Ale that I didn’t like so much!
Well, I read a few good thing about this beer and decided to give it a try. Based on the label, it should be something I like. Blueberry – Oatmeal – Stout. How can you go wrong? (It’s almost like breakfast in a bottle!)
The 7.5% ABV Buffalo Bill’s Blueberry Oatmeal Stout starts out well enough and looks like you would expect a stout to look. Its very dark, almost black, but if you hold it up to a bright light you’ll see that its clear and some ruby red colors do shine through. The head is decently foamy and has good retention.
On to the smell, which I think was the most surprising thing about this beer! As soon as I opened this Blueberry stout, I could smell fresh blueberry. It didn’t smell artificial or anything which was a good sign. Aside from the blueberry, you could smell something like roasted malt – hey, it’s a stout.
Taste for me is the biggest part when it comes to a beer. It can look and smell great, but if it doesn’t taste good that’s where I lose interest in a beer. The Buffalo Bill’s Blueberry Oatmeal Stout, unlike their over ‘vegetabally’ Pumpkin Ale tasted really good. Yes, there’s a good dose of blueberry flavor, but it isn’t something overwhelming or even the dominant flavor actually. It’s subtle, but its something that distinguished this stout from other oatmeal stouts like the River Horse Oatmeal Stout. A little fruit in the flavor seemed to work in this case.
In addition to the blueberry flavors, you get nice roasted malt flavors, perhaps some caramel sweetness too – nothing over the top, just a solid tasting stout with a touch of blueberry to give it a little something special.
Mouthfeel is also good – I found this beer to be nice and creamy, like you would hope a stout might be. This Buffalo Bill beer comes through nicely I think. I’d also say that this blueberry ‘enhanced’ beer is very drinkable – its smooth and I found it to be very enjoyable and a good beer for Winter.
Overall, I liked this Blueberry Oatmeal Stout. I think that Buffalo Bill’s Brewery has redeemed themselves in my eyes (like they had to) and I found myself impressed with this offering. I’d get it again and if you’re a fan of oatmeal stouts, you might want to give this one a try if you can find it.

I should mention that I had tried this beer and written the review in the Winter of 2010. Somehow the post got lost and didn’t get published until now! Better late than never, but I’m not sure this beer is available anymore. I haven’t seen it this Winter in Jersey.
