Just about a year ago, I first reviewed Kona’s Pipeline Coffee Porter, and was very happy to come into a few more bottles for myself recently! So far, I think its the best coffee-infused beer that I’ve tried. I like the style, and this one from Kona Brewing is done very well. This 5.3% ABV treat is a limited release, only available between September and March. If you see it, be sure to pick some up!
Their website provides the gory details.
“BITTERNESS: 23 IBU
ALCOHOL BY VOLUME: 5.3%
ORIGINAL GRAVITY: 13.5 P
MALTS: PALE, CARAPILS, VICTORY, CARAMEL 80, EXTRA SPECIAL, CHOCOLATE MALT, DARK CHOCOLATE MALT, ROASTED BARLEY
HOPS: WARRIOR, MILLENIUM , willamette
In addition, the coffee used is 100% Hawaiian Kona Coffee, and to me its a great balance. By that, I mean the coffee is enough to let you know that its in there, but no so much that it overwhelms the beer itself. Look up a few lines at the varieties of malts used. Chocolate Malt, Dark Chocolate Malt and other malts definitely come through in the flavor – nicely blended with that Kona Coffee, this is a great beer.
Its not too thick, but has a decent mouthfeel.
Anyway, if you can’t tell, I really liked this Kona Coffee Porter and stand by my original 4-star rating. That stated, I wouldn’t hesitate to pick some up again if I happen to see it. A great brew for the cooler months!

This is one of my favorite coffee porters. I have only found a couple I’ve liked better. The first is Meantime Coffee Porter, have you had it? It is from and English Brewery. The second I had just this last week as a part of the Beer and Chocolate pairing event I went to, and that was the Anubis Coffee Porter from Laughing Dog Brewery in Sandpoint, Idaho. They do distribute through Total Wine, so You might get a taste when and if they decide to bottle it.
@Don – I’m definitely going to watch for the Anubis Coffee Porter @Total Wine. As you mention, they carry some Laughing Dog brews so I’m hopeful. I haven’t tried the one from Meantime either – something else to look for now! I wish Pipeline Porter was easier for me to find too actually, its quite good!
WE call this one a breakfast beer where I am from. Before college football games kicked off, we would start our morning with a Kona Pipeline… So incredible!
@Jim – I’d say this beer would be perfect for that! Better than orange juice for sure!
I have never had this particular beer but I am a big fan of Kona Brewing
@Jake – its a winner! I’ve only had the Longboard lager which was also good. I’d like to try more of their stuff if I can!
