Shiner Hefeweizen was part of the “Family Reunion” Shiner variety pack I recently picked up as part of my beer review duties. 🙂 If you recall, Shiner is new in the New Jersey area – I’ve never tried anything from them before.
My impressions so far have mostly been meh. Yes, meh.
Of the three Shiner brews I’ve tried – Shiner Bock, Shiner Old Time Alt, and this Shiner Hefeweizen, only the Hefeweizen seen above was somewhat interesting to me.
It wasn’t great, but it wasn’t bad either. I thought it did most of those Hefeweizen things alright regarding the look, aroma, and even taste. (I do think they add orange peel like a Belgian Weissbier) which gave the beer a little more zing than usual, but compared to my all-time favorite American Hefe, Sierra Nevada Kellerweis, this example from Shiner pales in comparison.
Actually, I’m having a really hard time finding another American Hefeweizen as tasty as the SN Kellerweis. Any suggestions?
So, while the Shiner Hefeweizen was consumed quite easily and did its thing, its hard for me to jump up and down about it or even contemplate buying it again when there are obviously better choices out there for me.
What about you? What do you think of Shiner Hefeweizen?
