OK, so I know that the two or three loyal readers of The Brew Club are thinking… “WTF is MGD 64 Lemonade doing here, polluting valuable pixels and whatnot! This blog is supposed to be about good beer, not swill!” And you’d be right – but it wasn’t always like that here.
One of the coolest things about The Brew Club when we started it way back in 2008 was that any beer was fair game. If someone gave it to me, I tried it. Quite honestly, in 2008, I didn’t even know what craft beer was! Looking back, there are lots of beer reviews of Tecate, Landshark Lager, and Bud Lite Lime type of stuff getting tasted in these parts!
In a way, it was a great thing because I quickly began to appreciate drinking better beer and was understanding more about what makes a beer better. I guess its important to try “bad” beers now and then to remind yourself how good craft beer can be. So, there is a purpose! MGD 64 Lemonade fills that role for me in 2011!
And just to be clear, I didn’t go out and buy the MGD64 so you can put away your pitchforks and torches. Strangely, it was the oddball selection among some otherwise very fine beers that a couple of my friends brought when they came to visit. But, now that its here, I’m giving it a try – so you don’t have to!
I thought that perhaps MGD 64 Lemonade might taste like a Mike’s Hard Lemonade or something like that – boy was I wrong. MGD 64 Lemonade tasted like a lite beer, with slight lemony-extract stuff, and I mean slight. There was only a bit of lemon taste amongst an otherwise watery, thin, flat and completely uninspiring beer.
Here’s the upside. I guess. MGD 64 with “Natural lemon flavor and sucralose”, has 64 calories, 2.4 grams of carbs and an equally anemic 2.8% ABV. With stats like that, I’m guessing that its a beer for the calorie conscious or those who like to torture themselves, or others.
Considering the taste isn’t there, I don’t see the point of this beer at all. If you’re looking for a beer buzz, at under 3% ABV, you’ll have to chug quite a few of these which would eliminate the low-calorie benefits I would think. Same goes for the carbs.
For me personally, if I were looking for a lemony-flavored beer, I’d skip the MGD 64 Lemonade and have a “Shandy” or something like Stiegl Radler which is 50-50 lager and lemon soda and is actually enjoyable. Otherwise, I’d just have water with lemon juice if I were a health-nut.
