Well, its been 22 days since I started my personal no beer for a month challenge, and so far I’ve been able to hold out, even though I upped the ante on myself. Hey, what’s a challenge without a challenge?
OK, of you’ve been following my updates over the last few weeks, (why??? LOL!) you’ll know that I had an incident where I almost went to Total Wine to ‘look at the beers’. How weird, right? Look at beers? Well, of course I was telling myself I’d just look, not buy. Yeah right. So I was able to resist and not go in. Drove right by. Crisis averted.
This week, we had the first day that really, really felt like Fall here in New Jersey. I think it was 55 for a high, and I needed a jacket. At night, I could see my breath in the crisp air. Damn. Its Oktoberfest time! Oh wait, no beer for September. Well, stupid me I gave in to my obsession, went to Total Wine and bought a 12 pack of Sam Adams Octoberfest, and a six pack of what may be my favorite pumpkin ale, the Sam Adams Harvest Pumpkin Ale. D ‘Oh!
But guess what? I didn’t open them! I didn’t unseal the box, nor did I pop open a pumpkin ale. These autumnal treats went straight to the basement into a dark corner. I feel good knowing I have them, as I really do enjoy those two brews, and I actually don’t crave them at all. Sure I should have let it be, but whatever. I feel confident enough in by beer-resisting abilities after three weeks, its not a big deal.
Oh, and I have a friend bringing me a six-pack of Long Trail Harvest to try back from hurricane-ravaged Vermont. I’ve never had that one, a seasonal brown ale brewed with maple syrup, but I’m confident I’ll keep it that tucked away until October 1st as well.
I promise.
I’ve got a little more than a week left, so I’m going to finish strong – even with the beer in the basement!
PS – My weight is 207, so it looks like I’m down about a two an a half pounds since Sept 1st. Too small a drop to attribute it to no beer? Maybe, maybe not.

Awesome. My wife found a bottle of The Bruery’s Autumn Maple. Now that’s in the house too!
