Last year, when we were reviewing a whole bunch of pumpkin ales as usual, I came upon the Sam Adams Harvest Pumpkin Ale. Its worth repeating that while searching for the perfect Pumpkin Ale, I’ve found most of them to be somewhere between horrible and yucky. Yet, I persist in trying them.
My persistence, it seems, finally paid off! In 2009, I discovered Punkin’ from Dogfish Head. What a nice pumpkin ale that wraps up the Fall season in a 12 oz. serving. I get it every year now.
But, in 2010, I found this Pumpkin Ale from Sam Adams. The only problem was that it was embedded in the Fall Seasonal Variety Pack, which isn’t a bad thing, but while all good beers in their own right, I didn’t really want the Boston Lager, Irish Red, or even the Black Lager. But I DID want the Harvest Pumpkin Ale and the Octoberfest, so I bought the variety pack and moved on.
When I reviewed this excellent Pumpkin Ale last year, I wrote that the beer was “Good! So good, that I hope that Sam Adams makes this beer available in six-packs alongside their very tasty Oktoberfest in the future!”
And guess what? Like a genie victim having been granted a wish, I was shocked to find exactly that! Six packs of the Sam Adams Harvest Pumpkin Ale alongside their very tasty Octoberfest! Sure it took a year, but I’m not complaining!
So, the only possible explanation in my mind is that someone very, very high up at the Boston Beer Company who reads The Brew Club religiously, probably ‘Liked us‘ on Facebook and follows our Tweets, read my suggestion and thought “Hey, this guy knows what he is talking about! Let’s not mess around! Put the Pumpkin stuff in six-packs next year! Engage!”
Really. What else could it be?
So, I just wanted to say, you’re welcome Sam Adams! If you’re looking for a marketing genius to work for you, you know how to reach me!

Tara Nurin who have been writing about beer for years are important, but more than those lovely people, it’s the bar owners who actually give a shit about what they are drinking and selling and aren’t just in it for the trend, the money and the quick customers.
