Ayinger Celebrator Doppelbock is one of those beers that is widely accepted as one of the best best beers that can be had. Who am I to disagree?
Simply stated, this is a gre
at beer. Its the beer I chose to have when I found out my Wife was pregnant, and its the beer I had to celebrate my Daughter’s birth a few months later.
I know, you’re thinking “Gee, how hard is it to celebrate with a beer called Celebrator? Put some thought into your beer!”
You’d be right, but this really is a beer worthy of big events! Its no wonder that its considered one of the absolute best beers in the world.
Celebrator at first looks like prune juice in its opacity, but on closer inspection one finds that its more of a deep rust color than anything. Whatever color, you can’t see though it!
As you can see in the picture, it creates a dense, foamy head that caps the beer which left a little bit of lace as things progressed.
Now it gets interesting! The aroma of this 6.7% ABV beer really makes you want to get to the drinking part if it all! The bready smell, and toasty grains mix with aromas of dark fruit and sweet malt to make quite the bouquet. In fact, there is so much going on regarding the scent, that I’m sure I’m just barely describing it! Its quite complex, yet it seems to come together simply.
The flavor is equally complex yet simple. Maltiness, biscut, dark fruit, bitter chocolate, bread crust. That’s the core to me, but there is so much more to this beer you need to try it yourself.
Certainly, Ayinger cranks out some very good beers, and in that tradition, Celebrator Doppelbock is a beer worthy of all the praise. It easily exceeds the hype.

If you ever have the opportunity to try on draft, do it. You will be even more pleased.
So I’ve heard! Thanks for the reminder! I don’t get out much these days, so the bottles will need to do for now. A great beer that often gets overlooked these days.
It’s one of our favorites too – we gave it a 9/10. It’s a surprising beer because there’s so much intensity to the tastethat 6.7% ABV almost seems too low for the impact in your mouth. Feels more like an 8% or a 9% brew. Big Tex – I haven’t seen it on tap, but it’s now on my bucket list!
@Son. Good point about the complexity. There is a lot going on in this beer, something new every time I try it. Love to have it on tap as well!
I just had a Celebrator last week before going to a company Christmas party and felt that it did, in fact, put me in a celebratory mood. I also thought it was delicious. Cheers!
@Mike – Good use for that beer! Having one before the company Christmas party gave me the idea of having a few next time my Mother-In-Law is scheduled for a visit!
