Recently, I had the wonderful opportunity to take a two night pre-inaugural cruise on Celebrity Cruises brand new beautiful ship, the Silhouette.
Like other new cruise ships, there are plenty of innovations and unique venues. My favorite, without a doubt, is Michael’s Club. Michael’s Club is the first craft beer pub on a cruise ship. While some cruises stock a limited number of craft beers, Holland America’s Alaska sailings, for example, feature Alaskan Brewery products, finding anything beyond Bud or Amstel Light is quite difficult on a cruise.
Michael’s menu features 64 beers, such as Rogue Dead Guy Ale, Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA, and Brooklyn Brewery and Highland Brewing Company beverages. Imports include all three Chimay varieties, Hitachino Classic Ale, and various Belgian, German, and British brews. I should have stolen a menu for reference! Wine, scotch, and other libations are also served.
The atmosphere is a casual pub with dark, wood paneling, comfortable plush green chairs and low tables, stools and high tables, plus flat screen TVs showing sports. The LSU-‘Bama game was broadcast the night I was there. While drinking a bottle of Old Speckled Hen and surveying the room that evening, there were no Coronas or Miller Lites to be seen; all of the patrons were enjoying more unique brews.
While many cruises (including those on the Silhouette) offer wine tastings, Michael’s Club even has beer tastings! Guests had a “mini-tasting” of three beers; normally, one tries five beers. Our three were Fullers ESB, Paulaner Salvator Double Bock, and Highland Black Mocha Stout.
All three were quite good; as a fan of stouts and porters, the last one was outstanding! I’ve never seen Highland products in my area, and will definitely look for these when I’m in areas where the Asheville, NC, brews are distributed.
With so many different cruise lines and ships sailing, Michael’s Club is a definite advantage in helping beer fans choose the Celebrity Silhouette for their next cruise. Fantastic food, top-notch service, and spacious staterooms on this floating resort may help, too!
