I’ve been known to embark on a few quests in my day. When Shmaltz Brewing Company released the limited edition Vertical Jewbelation anniversary gift pack last winter, I was bound and determined to find it.
“Celebrating 14 Years of Delicious Beer and Delicious Shtick” as printed on the box. Eight different beers, seven of which have increasing ABV, a glass, candles, and instructions to build your own beer Menorah, how could any self-respecting Jewish beer geek NOT have this?
I called and visited dozens of stores in Maryland, DC, and Virginia, but with no luck. I called Shmaltz Brewing, was referred to the local distributor, but, again, no luck. Finally, I saw the eight beer filled box in the last place I’d expect – my local non-craft centric liquor store which is also the first shop I searched.
The plan was to drink one beer each night of Hanukkah, starting with Miraculous 8, the “first extreme Chanukah Beer ever created,” 8% ABV made with 8 malts and 8 hops; and continuing with Jewbelation 9, 5766, 9% ABV made with 9 malts and hops; Monumental 10,10% ABV made with 10 malts and 10 hops; Jewbelation 11, 11% ABV, made with, yeah, you guessed it, 11 malts and 11 hops; Jewbelation 12, 12% ABV, 12 malts and hops; Bar Mitzvah 13, 13% ABV, 13 malts and hops; and ending with He’Brew Jewbelation, the 100% barrel aged ale which is a blend of all seven years of Jewbelation aged in a rye whiskey barrel.
As luck would have it, I developed a severe sinus infection which prevented me from drinking for six weeks. Two co-workers gave me a Sam Adams Winter Sampler, which I had also purchased last fall, along with various other beers on a Total Wine road trip. So with many other beers in the hopper (or in the fridge and in storage), I decided to wait and enjoy the Jewbelation pack this year. Hopefully, the wait will be worth it!
And yes, there’s another gift pack out this year, which I haven’t located yet…Yet…
Have a wonderful holiday season, and a happy, healthy, prosperous New Year!
