Pike XXXXX Extra Stout is a 7% ABV beer made by the good people of Pike Brewing Company out of Washington State. Stouts, being among my mostest -favoriteist beer styles are always welcome at The Brew Club, and considering the good ratings this beer gets on some of the better beer sites, I was exited to try it.
Counter to my usual experience, I found that I liked this beer less and less the more I drank it whereas usually I’ll discover that I like a beer more and more as it breathes and warms.
The Pike XXXX Stout has some things going for it without a doubt. Nice body, creamy smooth mouthfeel, but I liked it much better cold when the flavors were more hidden. Why?
Licorice and bitter chocolate were the dominant characteristics of the aroma and the flavor. Initially, it was nice and I was digging it, and then it seemed to get really funky tasting as it warmed. The black licorice flavors burst through like a caged licorice beast (whatever that is) and in doing so this beer quickly slid from a 3.5 star to a 1.5 star beer.
Truth be told, I couldn’t finish the last half glass. Creamy, smooth, very black, very licorice-y. Everything great except taste, unless you like licorice flavored beer.
