Last year I reviewed Soundwave from Berkshire’s Sirencraft brewery, here at The Brewclub, and enjoyed it greatly.
Undercurrent is another of Sirencraft’s core brews, also available in Marks & Spencer here in Blighty.
Sirencraft themselves describe Undercurrent as “A 4.5% pale ale with spicy, grassy aromas and a taste of grapefruit and apricot”.
It pours a very pleasant pale gold, with a full, white head. The nose is spicy and citrusy, with pine needles and cut grass.
The flavour is bready, with Cascade and Palisade hops to the fore – Palisade hops hail from Yakima in Washington State.
I got the grapefruit, but couldn’t detect the promised apricot. There’s a smoothness that can possibly be attributed to oats in the mix. Other that Oatmeal Stout I can’t recall having had another brew with oats. Similarly, Palisade hops are new to me, but they seem to do the job.
So… another creditable Pale Ale from Sirencraft; they’re certainly a brewer I’ll look out for in the future.
That said, while ‘Undercurrent’ is not quite as epic as ‘Soundwave’, I’m still happy to give it three and a half Brewclub Stars.
