Guinness Foreign Extra Stout is derived from their ‘West India Porter’, which was first brewed in 1801 with a higher alcohol and hop content to better enable it to survive the journey to the Caribbean. West India Porter was shipped beyond the West Indies, reaching the United States in 1817 and Africa in 1827. It was renamed ‘Foreign Extra’ in 1849.
